BALTIMORE -- The first week of classes is over for Baltimore city students, but that hasn't stopped parents from phoning in their concerns to the school system, which has set up a center just for that reason.
Tim Tooten ReportsThe Baltimore City School Command Center is located on the third floor of city school system headquarters, and in two weeks, it has responded to more than 10,000 telephone calls, many of which were from city parents, officials said.
"If I can't fix it, I try and find the person who does fix it. And if I can't find the person who does fix it, I try and find somebody who knows who does," said Margaret Deans, who works in the center."Parents want to know what kind of school zone their children will be going to," said command center worker Delilah Weaver."We have former principals here, we have directors here. Actually, we are staff, and on top of our additional duties, we do this as well," said Zi Steve Richardson. The command center is customer service with a 21st Century twist -- computers."In front of the computer we can look up both the school zone for their child and, depending on the address, we can look up their immunization records so that we can confirm that when they get a letter in the mail saying that they are not in compliance, we can assist them with how they are out of compliance and direct them where they need to go," said worker Ann Grimes.School officials said they'll keep the phones lines open as long as parents and students need help.If you need to get in touch with the Baltimore City School Command Center call 443-984-2000.
