Sept. 4, 2008: Helping Gustav Victims

POSTED: 10:32 am EDT September 4, 2008
UPDATED: 10:35 am EDT September 4, 2008

While Hurricane Gustav did not wreak the destruction expected when it struck the Gulf Coast, other storms are on the way that may put families lives and property in jeopardy.

Almost two million Louisiana residents were evacuated and 45,000 of those woke up in more than 300 Red Cross Shelters in eight states. Food, shelter and emotional support are priceless during these times. The Red Cross is America's first responder for disaster relief. They have five hundred shelters across the country, four thousand disaster relief workers and are prepared to serve one million meals a day. For those of us who cannot be there, we can make a donation to the Red Cross Relief Fund or donate blood to help the Red Cross assist others.

Even a $25 dollar donation will buy five blankets for a shelter and $350 can feed 25 disaster victims for one day. The hurricane season has only just begun, but the Red Cross has a long history of being on the scene and helping victims through a very difficult time. Gustav has passed but flooding, power outages and debris remain. Thousands of National Guard Troops and federal and state officials have been deployed and we can all be proud of our response to the gulf. As we watch the storms come and go, we know there is help available.

To make a contribution to the Red Cross please log on to red cross.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS or text a donation using the keyword "GIVE". Thank You.
