Sept. 5, 2008: Presidential Conventions

POSTED: 9:06 am EDT September 5, 2008

The Democratic and Republican conventions of the past two weeks have offered historical milestones that very few had envisioned less than 100 years ago.

These conventions proved to be a fitting end to the "selection" process for the nominees for President and Vice President of the United States. Senator Hillary Clinton took her place in history as the first viable female Presidential candidate and the Democratic party nominated our country's first African-American candidate for the highest office in the land.

The Republican party brought its first female candidate to the ticket, in Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska. No matter your party affiliation, this year's slate of contenders and candidates make for a truly American story; a tangible example for our youngest generations that all things are possible in this great nation. Over the next eight weeks more history will be made as our country will have finally broken either the racial or gender barrier; moving us ahead one step further.

These eight weeks are a real life history lesson for our youth. A lesson of where we have come from and where are going. Whether you are a parent, teacher, relative, or neighbor, please be sure to point out the significance of this election to those who will set the next course of our nation's future; the children. Like those who influenced today's candidates to think bigger, you can do the same. This election is a truly historic, real life civics lesson that future generations will only get to read about.
